Regarding the improvement of air defense system Turkey is on a crossroad now. It is noteworthy that both European Eurofighter Typhoon and American F-35 Lightning II are among such aircraft. What could be tough for this country is having to make one decision over the other.
Understanding Turkey’s Air Force Needs
There are compelling reasons why the air force of Turkey needs to modernize in the face of both aging fleets and rising regional tensions. Most of today’s jets, for instance, F-16s and older variants, are reaching the end of their operational life. Modern threats – ranging from advanced missile systems to evolving combat scenarios – call for technologically superior aircraft.
Good levels of deterrence coupled with the protection of its airspace require multi-role fighter jets that would handle offensive and defensive missions alike.
The two products between which a choice needs to be made are Eurofighter and the F-35, both of which determine the future air power of the nation.

Eurofighter Typhoon: Features and Capabilities
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a fourth-generation, multi-role aircraft which has been produced through a European multinational program. It goes at a speed of Mach 2, has great avionic and air fight capabilities. Its twin-engine configuration provides great reliability when the situation gets really desperate.
The Typhoon excels in air-to-air combat and interception roles. Its advanced radar systems and weapon payload options make it a formidable opponent in any aerial battle. Additionally, its open architecture allows upgrades, ensuring longevity in service.
F-35 Lightning II: Features and Capabilities
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a highly maneuverable fourth generation multirole aircraft developed by European aerospace industries. It can go to Mach 2 and is endowed with splendid avionics in addition to air flexibility in operation. Its twin-engine configuration provides great reliability when the situation gets really desperate.
The Typhoon excels at any job that is given to it in air-to-air combat and interception. The superior radar, systems coupled with weapon payload options give it an upper hand in any air-to-air engagement. It is also open architecture with capacity for upgrades, so the service life will be long enough.
Cost Comparison: Eurofighter vs. F-35
The Eurofighter Typhoon costs about $90-120 million for each. The F-35 will run about $80 million for each of the F-35A variant before any other customization.
Although the Typhoon is cheaper to purchase, the Typhoon costs more to operate in fuel use and maintenance compared to the F-35. The latter is costly in operation but has cost savings through economies of scale and standardized production which may help lower cost over time.
Geopolitical Considerations for Turkey’s Selection
Turkey’s choice will determine how that plays in NATO. Selecting the F-35 would be on par with NATO standards, but there are geopolitical challenges to that. Selecting the Eurofighter would simply make it easier for Turkey to get along with European allies.
Turkey’s removal from the F-35 program over its acquisition of Russian S-400 systems complicates the choice. While the Eurofighter is free from U.S. sanctions, the F-35 offers a more advanced tech suite, albeit with strings attached.
Performance Comparison: Which Better Meets Turkey’s Needs?
Typhoon is an air-superiority fighter with tremendous capabilities in air-to-air close and long-range combat and defense. F-35 provides multi-role flexibility, with a huge advantage in stealth and electronic warfare missions.
A twin-engine configuration for the Typhoon would make maintenance easier but more expensive in the long run. The F-35 is configured to have leading-edge software and advanced components, which are pricey to maintain and support but give the future-proof capabilities in return.
Possible Impact on Turkey’s Defence Future
Getting either will dramatically increase Turkey’s regional influence. But whatever Turkey chooses will be choosing how it wants to fight its battles-air superiority or stealth operation.
Of course, investment in the F-35 might also open the doors for local industry to participate by eliminating geopotential challenges. Eurofighter, with its modular architecture, also offers opportunities for Turkey to integrate its indigenous systems and technologies.
